Description
The failed escape last week by eight members of the al-Qaeda inspired Fatah-Islam group from the high security prison of Roumieh, east of Beirut, has exposed the security problems facing Lebanon where politics interfere with the conduct and behavior of security agencies. AN NAHAR columnist Hiyam Kosseifi sounded the alarm about the many loopholes plaguing the security system in the country whose very future is at stake, she said. "The incident itself could happen in any other country but it takes different dimensions in a country that has multiple security authorities with entwined powers and security apparatuses with allegiances to different and multiple political factions," Kosseifi contended in a takeout on August 21. The only "positive" result of the incident dubbed in the press as "the great escape" is that it brought out in the open the many security gaps in Lebanese security institutions. Such gaps were merely tackled behind curtains, the columnist said. Only the trading of accusations and blame between the rival political powers was exposed to the public, she added.
